Massage can help balance the energy flow of the body,
because many of the manipulations stimulate the energy points &
thereby increase energy flow. Massage is useful as a preventative
measure as well as an aid to cure.
The Chinese first recorded the use of massage around 2500BC. Around
1800BC the Indian Ayurvedic literature described the practice of
herbs, spices & oils being massaged into the skin. During the
Middle Ages massage was suppressed in the West, however ordinary
people kept the practice alive. In the 16th century one of the founders
of modern surgery, Frenchman Ambrose Pare, began to use massage
techniques for joint stiffness & wound healing after surgery.
Gradually the practice of massage became accepted & by 1918
had developed into a field of medical health care. The most recent
revival of massage began around 1960 & has continued to this
day.
